Valuing a vehicle

Look up a vehicle, read its valuation, and adjust it for mileage, date and condition.

Valuing a vehicle is the core of Companion. You enter a VRM or VIN, read the figures, and refine them until they match the car in front of you.

Run the valuation

From the dashboard, enter the vehicle's VRM or VIN and select Look up. If your branch has a provenance product too, choose Companion in the selector first.

Before you search you can add:

  • Mileage, or leave it blank for an estimate.
  • A reference, if your branch uses references, to find the lookup again later.
  • A valuation date, to value as at a past date rather than today.

See Getting started for the form in detail, and Valuations explained for what each figure means.

Read the result

The valuation opens on a single page covering:

  • The values: trade, retail, private and market value, with original cost new and depreciation where your branch has them.
  • The vehicle: its description and specification, with photos where available.

The figures are headline numbers; the market overview and timeline below them show the evidence behind the valuation.

Adjust and recalculate

The valuation responds to three things, and recalculates as you change them:

  • Mileage. Enter a real reading in place of an estimate, or refresh to today's estimate.
  • Valuation date. Move it to a date of loss or any past date.
  • Condition. Switch between Good and Poor so the figure reflects the actual car.

Save and share

  • Valuation certificate. Where your branch has it, download a print-ready PDF of the valuation to attach to a claim or a deal.
  • Get support on this vehicle. If a figure looks wrong or you want it reviewed, raise an enquiry about this specific vehicle from the valuation, and the support team will pick it up. See Account and support.
