Running a check
Run a provenance check, read the result, and open the full report.
A check tells you what a valuation cannot: whether the vehicle carries finance, has been written off, is recorded as stolen, and the rest of its provenance. See Provenance explained for the background; this guide is the how-to.
Start a check
There are three ways in:
- From the dashboard, enter the VRM or VIN and select AutoCheck or MotorCheck in the selector (whichever your branch has).
- From a valuation, run a check on the same vehicle without retyping it.
- From your recent activity, recheck a vehicle you have looked at before.
Depending on your branch, you can choose extras before it runs, such as including a valuation with the check, a data guarantee, or fuller mileage data.
Read the status
The result leads with a single status so you know the outcome immediately:
- Clear: nothing of concern.
- Caution: something worth knowing.
- Warning: something significant that should change your decision.
Open the status to see the flags behind it, grouped by how serious they are, each with the detail that backs it up. A write-off, a stolen marker or outstanding finance will surface here as a warning; plate changes, imports or mileage discrepancies as cautions.
Open the full report
For the complete provenance record, open the full report. It sets out the legal status (finance, write-off category, stolen, import and export), the condition record where there is one, and the supporting detail for every flag. Depending on the provider, the report may open in a new tab.
Where your branch has it, you can download the report as a PDF to keep with a claim or a sale.
